You're on your own! You've reached a dream and one of life's major milestones - your first apartment! The place is perfect and it's quickly becoming your new home.
While getting an apartment is exciting, it's important you get protection as well. An often overlooked part of renting an apartment is making sure your possessions are protected by renters insurance. It's easy to overlook, too. Unlike auto or homeowners insurance, you're not required by law or a lender to get renters insurance.
Renters insurance is important. If something happened to your apartment and your possessions were damaged or destroyed, would you have enough money in your pocket to replace them? For less than you might expect, you can have your possessions covered by renters insurance.
You own more than you think
If you're new to renting, chances are you think you don't have much to be insured. This video might make you think again.
Take a minute and look around your apartment. What do you see? Chances are you've got:
- Personal electronics like a TV or stereo
- Digital music players
- CDs and DVDs
- Sporting goods (bicycle, golf clubs, hunting or fishing gear, etc.)
- Pots, pans, dishes and small kitchen appliances
- Jewelry (including watches and rings)
- Art or other decorations
- Computer equipment
- Gaming systems
If you took a few minutes to add everything up and determine what it would cost to replace, you'd realize you have a lot more than you think you do.
Not only does renters insurance cover your possessions, most policies include liability insurance in case you are responsible for damage to someone else's property or cause an injury.
